WORKS INTENDED FOR YOUTH CONCERTS

In the vast repertoire for orchestra, there is no dearth of music that is suitable and appropriate for youth concerts. Almost any composition or excerpt can be made to work, if put in the right context.

This appendix, however, is concerned with works intended primarily for young audiences. These tend to be works using narrations and composed after 1925 or so. The conspicuous exception is Saint-Saëns’ well-loved Carnival of the Animals, which was intended neither for children nor spoken commentary, but rather for family entertainment. It is included here because, with the addition of humorous narrative—usually verse—it has often come to be used to entertain youngsters.
